About Barnsley College

Barnsley College is known as one of the best Colleges in the UK by Ofsted, the independent UK education inspection agency. It provides excellent standards of further education, to meet personal and professional development needs. It is located at Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. Over 6,500 students study at the college either full or part time, and the goal is to help them achieve their full potential. Currently there are students from over 70 nationalities attending the college. The college has also been awarded the prestigious Beacon Status from the UK Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), and this is confirmation of exemplary teaching and learning practice. 

The college offers subjects such as business administration, public services, mathematics, IT; besides offering Apprenticeships programmes in accountancy, horticulture, engineering, etc. Courses on Skills for Life to adult learners include office skill, literacy, numeracy, ESOL and child care. The college also offers apprenticeships programmes for students to gain practical experience to master the skills at the workplace. Courses are designed to maximise student development and to teach them skills needed to progress on to further study or get a job in a chosen industry.

Barnsley College is the best in the area and is steadily developing its international department. With this department being in its embryonic stage the staff can offer international students as much of their time as is required. Students are encouraged to visit the department for cultural and local information and can be advised where to seek any further academic support or professional personal support. The college also has a wide range of facilities, including a food court and high quality restaurant, coffee bars, gym and many others.

Barnsley College is one of a small number of Colleges with a Sports Academy that provides learners with the opportunity to study and develop as a performance specialist whilst pursuing their sporting dreams. The Sports Academy here has a national reputation for supporting individual athletic development, and producing some of the regions strongest and most successful sport teams. Besides that, Barnsley College also offers a range of support and flexible study strategies to any student who has a disability, a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia or dyspraxia, or a chronic health condition, including any mental health issue such as depression or anxiety. Barnsley College also has a wide range of shops and leisure facilities including Zest Restaurant, Crumbs Cafe, Images Salon, Funky Dory Gifts retail outlet, and Wigfield Farm in order to provides opportunities for the students to learn out of the class.

Accommodation

Residence Halls (below 18 years old)
We offer high quality, secure and comfortable accommodation near to our campuses. The accommodation is situated within walking distance of Barnsley town centre which provides the perfect base to explore with a guide present. Our purpose built accommodation for under 18s is equipped with a light, spacious bedroom with en-suite bathroom. Each bedroom includes a study desk, chair, bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers. There is a kitchen, accessible to all students, with the option of self-catering or half board. There is also an on site laundry room, common room with TV and several game/entertainment facilities e.g. pool table, table tennis (ping pong) and table football. Please note these facilities are access controlled and will have a supervisor/carer present at all times. The residence hall has 24hour security and parents can communicate with the staff or student at any time.

Residence Halls and Private Accommodation (above 18 years old)
Students over 18 years old have the option to rent private accommodation or stay in a hall of residence, living amongst other students. The accommodation is within walking distance of all our campuses and also near to the town centre, shops and cafes.

Homestay- Experience the true British culture
As a student, if you wish to immerse yourself in a true British culture then opting for a homestay is the perfect choice. We have many different options of homestay including hosts with children of their own, families who are already hosting international students and some who live alone. There are beneficial factors to the homestay option. These include spending time being a part of a family and understanding and experiencing the authentic British culture. Additionally, you are practicing your English on a regular basis and will rapidly improve your speaking and listening skills. Each homestay will offer as a minimum a study desk, chair, bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and room with plenty of natural light. There will be internet and telephone access. Hosts will provide nutritious cooked meals when not in college.
