Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) is located in ancient capital city of Xi'an. As a university of science and technology, NPU, research-oriented, multi-disciplinary, and internationally-open, outstands in aeronautics, astronautics, and marine technology home and abroad. While NPU excels at science and technology, harmoniously, it also well develops in the fields of management, humanities, economics, and law. The university is affiliated with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and is a member of "Outstanding University Alliance" in China.

NPU has 16 academic schools, offering 62 undergraduate programs, 122 postgraduate programs, 69 doctoral programs, and 16 postdoctoral programs. Now it has 2 First-Class State Key Disciplines, 7 Second-Class State Key Discipline, 2 State Key Demonstration Disciplines, 21 Doctoral disciplines, 31 Master disciplines, 1 State Key Laboratory, 6 State Key Defense Laboratories, 2 State Engineering Centers, 1 National Defense Science and Technology Industrial Research Center, 33 Provincial Key Labs, 20 provincial Engineering research centers, and 1 Provincial Humanities & Social Sciences Base.

NPU has more than 3,500 faculty members, including 1,700 full and associate professors, 538 PhD supervisors, 19 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) or the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), 20 chair and lecture professors of Cheung Kung Scholars Program, 10 nominees of “Thousand Talents Program” and 11 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 13 winners of China Youth Science and Technology Award, 7National Experts with Remarkable Contributions, 4 winners of National Distinguished Teacher, 18 winners of New Century Talents Project, 2 winners of Young Talents Award, 3 winners of Excellent Youth Science Foundation and 98 winners of New Century Excellent talents Program. Presently NPU has 7 national teaching teams and 7 national innovative research teams, 2 NSFC innovative research groups, 8 national defense innovative teams and 1 outstanding national defense innovative team.

Since the foundation, NPU has graduated 160,000 talents for National Defense and Economy, with 4500 doctors and 29300 masters. 34 doctors or teachers got Hundborg Foundation. NPU has established cooperation with over 100 universities, enterprises and institutes from different countries like U.S.A, UK, Germany, France, Russia and Japan, etc.

NPU has two campuses, namely Youyi Campus and Chang’an Campus. NPU covers an area of 840 acres, 198 for Youyi Campus (located in Beilin District, Xi’an) and 642 for Chang’an Campus (located in Chang’an District, Xi’an). 

• The Youyi Campus, often referred as the 'old campus', is divided into three parts: the South, the West and the North by the West Youyi Road and the South Laodong Road. The campus hosts education facilities, apartments of teachers and students, stadiums, logistics facilities, a kindergarten and the primary and middle school affiliated to NPU. 
• The Chang'an Campus, often referred as the 'new campus', is divided into two parts: the East and the West by the Dongxiang Road. This campus hosts many newly built administration buildings, school buildings, experiments facilities, sports facilities and so on. It serves as the main base for undergraduate education of NPU.

NPU is located in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China. NPU has two campuses. Youyi campus is located in Beilin District, Xi’an and Chang’an campus is located in Chang’an District, Xi’an. Youyi campus is located on Youyi Xilu (Friendship road) and is about two kilometers from city wall and about 5 kilometers from city center Zhong Lou.  A bus service is available for all students and staff between both campuses at nominal charges. This is an hourly service in working days and five times a day in vacations. Students can also travel on public buses easily available outside campus. The travel time between campuses is about 50 minutes.
