The School of Business at the University of Dundee continues to strengthen its links with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

ACCA is the global professional body for professional accountants and is a thriving global community of 233,000 members and 536,000 future members based in 178 countries and regions, who work across a wide range of sectors and industries. ACCA uphold the highest professional and ethical values.

ACCA’s qualifications and learning opportunities develop strategic business leaders, forward-thinking professionals with the financial, business and digital expertise essential for the creation of sustainable organisations and flourishing societies.

ACCA believe that accountancy is a cornerstone profession of society and is vital in helping economies, organisations and individuals to grow and prosper. It does this by creating robust trusted financial and business management, combating corruption, ensuring organisations are managed ethically, driving sustainability, and providing rewarding career opportunities.

Accounting and Finance has been taught at the University of Dundee for 50 years. The current portfolio of bachelor and master’s level courses is one of the most advanced and highly respected in the UK. In the 2021 Complete University Guide Rankings in the UK, Accounting/Finance in the School was ranked as 7th in the whole of the UK. A tremendous achievement and a signal of the positive development happening in this area of teaching.

For a number of years, we have delivered our MSc Professional Accountancy degree, fully accredited by the ACCA. This 12-month Master’s degree offers graduates full exemption from ACCA’s applied knowledge/applied skills examinations upon completion. Previously known as papers F1-F9, these are the maximum number of exemptions available through a University course in the UK, before the graduates move onto complete the ACCA professional papers in their own time. This particular degree is attractive to students around the world who have studied accounting/finance at bachelor level but have not already achieved all the ACCA exemptions.

At the Master’s level, we also offer MSc Finance and MSc Accounting and Finance. Both carry some ACCA accreditation and along with the MSc Professional Accountancy, offer start dates in January and September each year. These two courses also provide the opportunity to specialise in areas such as Risk and Investment Management.

In 2020, the School launched a new course, once again drawing on the support of the ACCA. The new MAcc Accounting degree is an innovative and exciting new course, offering students something that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the UK.

Course Director, Dr Alison Fordyce explains;

“Our new MAcc Accounting degree is a bachelor entry level degree, with a master’s level qualification, delivered in only 3-years. We refer to this as an Integrated Master’s degree.

“It is an intensive level of study taking only 3-years, instead of 4 or 5 years to complete a separate bachelor and Master’s level degree. Whilst it is an intensive period of study, it does mean that students will be ready for the job market, with a Master’s qualification much quicker than their peers. So well worth the effort. It also works out cheaper in the long run.”

The new MAcc welcomes its first students in September 2022 and provides full exemption from the ACCA applied knowledge/ applied skills examination. In the final year it also focuses on preparing students for the ACCA strategic professional examinations.

Beyond the delivery of courses, our link with the ACCA offers other benefits to our students. Our colleagues at the ACCA deliver career workshops and advise on how to enter the job market. They also take students down to the ACCA HQ in Glasgow to meet staff and learn more about careers in accounting.
