Choosing the right degree programme is a tough decision. From bachelor’s to doctoral study, deciding on what course to take somewhat defines your future. If you are having difficult time deciding on which course to pick, here are some things that you can consider to help you:
1. Stumble Upon Your Passion
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.” -Steve Jobs
Bear in mind that the program you’ll choose will lead you to your future job. Assess what are the things you love to do. It could start on simple things such as reading books, watching movies, drawing, cooking, designing your room, playing instruments, fixing broken things, or even chatting with friends. There is always an equivalent course for everything and surely you’ll find the perfect match to the things you love doing!
2. Know Your Favourite Subject
“No one can ever excel in great things, who does not first excel in small.” -St. Francis Xavier
Do you do better in Math? Science? English? Or Computer? Maybe you found these as minor school subjects during your early academic years, but knowing which subjects you excel in is also important to consider. It will give you lead on which degree programme is good for you.. If you enjoy Math, you can consider taking engineering courses; or if you like Science better, then you can check medical courses. Knowing what subject you enjoy the most is significant as you will be devoting four or more years of your life mastering them. .
3. Visualise Yourself in the Future
“The future depends on what we do in the present.” -Mahatma Gandhi
Try to imagine yourself in the next few years and answer the following questions: Will the programme help you land the job you want? Will it open job opportunities for you? Will it make you a valuable person? Ask yourself these questions as choosing a particular course will be beneficial in the future.
There is a lot to consider in choosing the right degree: how much will it cost; the availability of the university that offers the course; its earning potential, etc. But the most important of all is to follow where your heart leads. As Oprah Winfrey quote:
“The biggest adventure you can take, is to live the life of your dreams.”
