About University of Dundee

The University of Dundee is a public university founded in 1881, became a college of St Andrews University in 1897, became an independent University in 1967. The university has merged with Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Northern College of Education and Fife and Tayside Schools of Nursing.

There are 17,883 students in this University that is located in the city of Dundee, Scotland. The University is organized into 4 colleges, namely, the College of Art, Science & Engineering (architecture, computing, art and design, engineering physics and mathematics), the College of Arts and Social Sciences (accounting & finance, education, social work, humanities and law), the College of Life Sciences (life sciences research and life sciences teaching) and the College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing (dentistry, medicine, nursing and midwifery).

The University ranked 140 among the world's top 200 universities in the Times Higher Education 2010-11 World University Rankings. The School of Dentistry is ranked top in Scotland and second in the UK for teaching excellence in the Guardian's University Guide for 2011. The University is also in the top ten UK Universities for teaching and learning - Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2010. The university's aims is to advance and diffuse knowledge, wisdom and understanding by teaching and research and by the example and influence of its corporate life.

The university has four residence on the main campus or nearby (WestPark, the furthest, is approximately 1½km, half way between the main campus and Ninewells campus). All study-bedrooms are furnished with a bed, wardrobe, chair and desk, computer link, all have en-suite shower and toilet. All the Residences are self-catering and each flat has a kitchen with a cooker, kettle, microwave and fridge/freezer.

Dundee's City Campus is a true city centre campus only five minutes walk from the shops and the cultural quarter whereby Ninewells Campus, located at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, is about a 20-minute walk from the City Campus. The city's bus station is only 10 minutes walk from City Campus and provides connections with many major cities in Scotland and the rest of the UK.


Living and working on campus enables you to throw yourself right into student life, experience the very best that the campus and city have to offer and meet people who will probably end up being your closest friends for the rest of your life. 

Our 900 single rooms on campus and over 400 across the road provide the perfect environment for students, just 5 minutes from the city centre and 2 minutes from lecture theatres. We also have 300 rooms between the city campus and Ninewells Hospital which are a 20 minute walk away. We have a Student Support Worker and Assistants on hand to help students as well as night security personnel.

At Dundee we are proud to guarantee accommodation to all new students at the University who apply before the deadline. Our residence contracts cover the whole academic year (39 weeks from September to May) so you can leave your belongings in your room if you decide to go home for the holidays. Longer contracts are also possible for students who need to stay in Dundee during the summer period. In addition, Dundee has a wide range of competitively priced private accommodation close to the University campus. Our Students’ Union offers free legal advice to help with matters such as leases.
