Entry Requirements

Please note: This course is now available to continental European and UK students as well as international applicants.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree (BSc or equivalent) in Forensic Science or a related subject including Biosciences (Molecular Biology, Genetics, Human Genetics), Physical Anthropology, Archaeology and Criminalistics.

The program requires a strong command of the English language with a minimum requirement equivalent to IELTS 6.5 in both written and spoken English.

Module Content
Forensic Genetics

DNA analysis methodology. Population genetics. Related statistics and stochastics. Independent study seminars.

Crime Scene Investigation Crime scene analysis. Indoor and outdoor crime scenes. Forensic excavation of burial scenes. Mass fatality incident management and analysis.
Forensic Anthropology Full spectrum of methodology for the Anthropological analysis of skeletal human remains. Morphognostic, metric, histological and molecular analysis. Post mortem decomposition and PMI determination. Osteological practical.
Human Identification from Physical Characteristics Biometric identification methodology. Friction ridge analysis. Facial recognition. Retinal scanning and vein mapping. Individual identifying characteristics (scars, tattoos, etc.). Mass fatality incident identification (Disaster Victim Identification: DVI).
Professional Skills The Forensic process and its stages. Case files and court reports. Court room skills. Quality control and assurance. Management of mass fatality incidents.
Laboratory techniques Practical skills tool kit. Hands-on lab practicals in Molecular Biology / DNA manipulation.
Gene Technology Molecular Biology – Theory Module. DNA sequencing and cloning. Chromosomal aberrations and analysis. Hereditary diseases, inheritance and diagnostic Gene therapy. Use of internet based tools such as Pubmed and OMIM.
Research Methods Research skills tool kit. Project specific literature review. Experimental design and project planning. Oral presentation. Statistics and experimental problems
Research Project Research-based experimental project (10 weeks). Independent research in collaboration with a supervisor. Presentation of findings in a seminar. Research thesis.
