Entry Requirements

  • GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C or above, or Grade 4 under newly reformed GCSE grading, in English Language, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
  • A-level subjects: No specific subjects required. Points from A-Level General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-Levels.
  • Relevant subjects: Humanities, Media, English, Social Sciences.
  • EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: No specific subjects required.
  • Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma; to include 15 level 3 credits at merit.
  • Baccalaureate IB: No specific subjects required.

Curriculum

Year one

You are introduced to key theories, histories and techniques in media practice, particularly photography, video, web media and print journalism. In journalism, you will be writing features, news stories, reviews and editorials, as well as developing skills in digital media production. You will debate the changing role of media and journalism within society and its relationship to consumer culture, democracy and everyday life in a globalised world.

Year two

You will be writing features, news stories, reviews and editorials, as well as developing skills in digital media production. You will discover the place of journalism within society and its relationship to democracy and learn about the history and structure of media.

You will be developing your journalism as well as digital media skills and advance your critical understanding of and ability to question the role of journalistic media and public communications in society. The year is designed so you can pursue more independent projects in Year three.

Final year

You will develop specialist knowledge in the study of contemporary journalism, ethics, media and culture, honing expertise in writing, media production and research as a stepping stone to employment or further advanced study. You can do a substantial independent project drawing on your digital media and journalism and academic research skills developed in years 1 and 2. You can also choose to undertake a work placement as part of your studies.
