Curriculum
Subject areas range from the development of conceptual drawing, presentation drawing and graphic design skills, to the study of garden design throughout the world and the design potential of plants.
Practical areas of study will include hard and soft landscaping, site surveying and costing's. Assessment is continuous throughout the course, in the form of projects and design work. Students will compile a design portfolio during the year of study.
- Context, Theory & Process in Garden Design - This module looks at designing small gardens whilst developing an appreciation of site context, client needs in terms of function, site planning, scale and the development of concepts that provide the inspiration for unique garden design.
- Garden Design Projects - This module is a continuation of the previous module and develops on from the themes considered in this module. Level surveying is learnt and is used to consider site modifications in terms of cut, fill and drainage. Visual communication skills are developed through the production of presentation plans, planting plans, isometric, single point perspective, 2 point perspective drawings and the use of SketchUp software. The students gain experience in designing a wider range of garden types and sizes.
- Selecting & Using Plants in Design - This module places plant usage and features in gardens and the designed landscape in a historical context. It explores the ways in which plants are used within garden design with specific reference to the selection and establishment of plants as components of the landscape.
- Landscape Materials & Contract Management - This module looks at how hard landscape materials and features are used in garden design. There is an opportunity in practical sessions for students to build some garden elements. Business start up and running a garden design business are covered. Students are taught how to write preliminaries, general and component specifications, the various forms of agreement and also the paperwork involved in project management.
