Entry Requirements

  • Completion of an undergraduate major in history or a minimum of 18 hours of history, a grade point average of 2.75 or letter, including all undergraduate hours.
  • A 3.00 grade point average in history. 
  • Submit a one-page Statement of Purpose and a writing sample of no more than twenty (20) pages, directly to the graduate coordinator. 
  • International students are required to have a minimum score of 600 (paper based) or 100 (internet based) on the TOEFL examination, or a 7.5 overall band score on the IELTS exam. 


Thesis Program
Students must complete a minimum of 31 graduate hours including 3 hours of HIST 725, Advanced Historical Methods, which must be taken during the first year of enrollment. Thesis students must take 19 semester hours numbered 700 level or above. Students following the American history emphasis must
take 6 hours of American history seminars and 3 hours of European history seminar. Students following the European history emphasis must take 6 hours of European history seminars and 3 hours of American history seminar.

A majority, but not all, of the remaining hours must be taken in American or European history, according to the emphasis, for a total of 31 credit hours. Students must also satisfy the foreign language requirements, pass a written exam in one comprehensive field, and pass an oral examination in defense of the thesis. The written exam must precede the oral examination.

Non-Thesis program
Students must complete a minimum of 33 hours including 3 hours of HIST 725, Advanced Historical Methods, which must be taken during the first year of enrollment. Non-thesis students must take 21 semester graduate hours numbered 700 level or above.
