About Western Michigan University

Founded in 1903, what was once Western Michigan College became Michigan's fourth public university in 1957. Since then, WMU has experienced dramatic growth in size and stature. Today, the University offers more than 240 academic programs to students pursuing degrees through the doctoral level.

Both the faculty and the student body reflect WMU’s reputation in the world and its commitment to diversity. The University recruits students across the nation. Campus information

Kalamazoo, the home of WMU’s main campus, is midway between Chicago and Detroit, and one hour south of Grand Rapids. Kalamazoo offers commercial transportation by train, bus and major airline.

  • Spring semester sign-up underway.
  • New student sign-up for fall begins Feb. 2, 2016 at 9 a.m. EST.
  • Returning student sign-up begins in January

    • Any hall: Feb. 8, 2016
    • Single room and Western Heights lottery: Jan. 19, 2016

WMU Apartments

Eligibility: Upper-level, non-traditional and graduate students; students with families (Western View can not accommodate families)

  • Spring applications available Nov. 9, 2015
  • Fall applications available Jan. 12, 2016


Eligibility: Seniors, non-traditional and graduate students at least 21 years of age
