There is much more to Tampa's location than beautiful beaches and pleasant year-round temperatures. With 2.7 million people, the Tampa Bay area is West Central Florida's center of government, commerce, communications, business, health care, scientific research, sports, culture and entertainment.

The David A. Straz, Jr. Center for Performing Arts, Tampa Museum of Art and the Amalie Arena are just a five-minute walk from campus. Busch Gardens, the Lowry Park Zoo and the Florida Aquarium are also popular Tampa attractions. Students are only a 30-minute drive from the front gates of Ruth Eckerd Hall, the Mahaffey Theater, the Florida International Museum and the Salvador Dali Museum.

The turnstiles at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, as well as Sea World and Universal Studios are also just a short drive away.

Five major shopping malls and hundreds of nearby restaurants offer many options for shopping and dining. Historic Ybor City, only 10 minutes away, is well-known for its vibrant nightlife, dining and entertainment.

With plenty of sunshine, Tampa residents love sports activity. Bayshore Boulevard offers a six-mile continuous waterfront sidewalk for jogging, rollerblading, and cycling. Fans root for the Tampa Bay 's Buccaneers football, Lightning hockey and Rays baseball teams. The area has long been home to many baseball teams' spring training facilities – with Tampa serving as host for the New York Yankees.

The University of Tampa provides many lifestyle options. While every effort is made to accommodate all new and returning students who request housing, beginning in Fall 2016, new UT students will receive priority for on-campus residential assignments. Austin, McNeel Boathouse, McKay, Morsani, Smiley and Vaughn Center will all be designated as first-year and alcohol free residence halls. Depending on the first-year student class size, Brevard may also be used for some first-year students. Brevard, Jenkins, Palm Apartments, Straz and Urso will be designated as upper-class residence halls. Upper-class students will also be able to select the Barrymore Hotel through room selection.

Each building offers different floor plans. Most new students are expected to share rooms with at least one other student. New students may also be assigned to triple or quad rooms. Most singles are reserved for upper-class continuing students. Learning communities provide opportunities for students to live together based on similar interests.

All residence halls are smoke free. Austin Hall, McNeel Boathouse, Brevard Hall, Barrymore Hotel, McKay Hall, Morsani Hall, Smiley Hall and Vaughn Center (floors 3-8) are alcohol-free residence halls.
