Welcome to Rutgers University in Newark. On two separate campuses in the city of Newark -- theRutgers University-Newark Campus and the Rutgers Health Sciences Campus at Newark -- Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey, distinguishes itself as one of the nation’s most esteemed public research universities.

Campus information

Thirty-one buildings, 38 acres of beautifully landscaped open spaces with an urban vibe, and nearly 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Rutgers University-Newark is all that as well as computer and science labs, smart classrooms, moot courtrooms, libraries, recreational facilities, residence halls, dining rooms, snack bars, and more. Thirty-one buildings seem like a lot; here’s a guide to what’s where.

First Year Students

First year students will be mostly assigned to Woodward Hall, and Talbott Apartments for should additional assignments need to be placed.

Woodward Hall:

First year undergraduate students and some newly admitted transfer students are typically assigned to Woodward Hall.  These suite style accommodations are fully furnished non-cooking units with 3 double bedrooms, a living room, bathroom, and vanity area.  Attached to Woodward Hall is Stonsby Commons, the main dining eatery for Woodward Hall residents.  While Woodward hall residents are required to be on a meal plan, any student may purchase a meal plan and eat in all campus dining halls including Stonsby Commons.

  • Each bedroom is 11.5 feet x 15.5 feet (not including closets).
  • Several suites have special accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • All rooms have both wired and wireless internet access and telephone, and digital cable.
  • All rooms have wall to wall carpeting.
  • Bedrooms are furnished with twin beds with twin extra long 80" mattresses.
  • Each bedroom is furnished with a desk, dresser, and closet.
  • Six students share a common living room, bathroom, and vanity area.
  • Each suite is equipped with seasonal central air conditioning.
  • 24 hour computer lab in the building.
  • 24 hour laundry room in the building.

Talbott Apartments:

First Year Students will be assigned to our 2-bedroom, 4-person apartments.

  • Each bedroom in the two bedroom apartment is 18 feet x 11.6 feet.
  • Several suites have accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • All rooms have wired and wireless for Internet, digital cable, and telephone (contracted separately).
  • All rooms have wall to wall carpeting.
  • 24 hour computer lab in the building.
  • 24 hour laundry room.

Graduate student

Graduate student housing is available in 15 Washington Apartments.

15 Washington Apartments is an iconic Newark skyscraper, neo-classical building, built in 1929.  It served as the headquarters of the American Insurance Co. and later served as home to Rutgers School of Law in Newark.  In 2015. it will open as a newly converted university-affiliated high-end graduate and undergraduate apartments.  This will be the only university-affiliated housing for graduate students.

In 15 Washington Apartments, graduate students reside on the tower side of the building from the 3rd to the 13th floor of of the building.  Apartment styles range from Studios, 2 bedrooms, 3 bedrooms, and 4 bedrooms where each graduate student has his own bedroom and shares the common area with the number of roommates they would have depending on the apartment sytle.  15 Washington Apartments will include various study spaces, a small exercise room, and 24 hour security.
