About this course

Welcome to Valdez, Alaska! We are situated in one of the most epic locations on the planet. The Outdoor Leadership program is a two-year degree program focused on teaching the skills needed to travel and work in the dynamic tourism, adventure film, and expedition leadership fields. PWSC’s Valdez campus is located in an outdoor paradise, with opportunities to film, ski, fish, backpack, kayak, and explore natural settings right outside the doors.

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Outdoor Leadership is a 63-67 credit hour degree program. In addition to 15 hours of general education requirements and industry-leading emergency medical training, the ODS degree provides one of the most rigorous applied training programs in the field of outdoor leadership, through instruction and practice within one or more of the three emphasis areas: Adventure Filmmaking, Professional Alpine Leader, and Professional Aquatic Leader. This degree prepares students for immediate employment in the outdoor recreation industry and is awarded after the minimum of sixty-three (63) credit hours and a GPA of 2.0 or higher has been satisfied.

Students can choose to focus their studies by selecting one of the following emphasis:

  • Adventure Filmmaking Emphasis
  • Professional Alpine Leader Emphasis
  • Professional Aquatic Leader Emphasis

Entry Requirements

  • Copy of Diploma (from High School or secondary school).
  • TOEFL Score (minimum score of 61 ibt) or iTEP (minimum Level 4). These tests are not required for ESL students or for students where English is your first language. (All students must take the ESL/English or Math assessment, unless they have already had English 1A or English 5 or math classes at another community college or higher education institution within the Unites States that is accredited).
  • Personal Essay (1 page describing educational goals, aspirations, etc…).
