About Oregon State University

Founded in 1868, Oregon State University (OSU) is a public research university that is located in Corvallis, Oregon, United States. OSU is one of only 73 land-grant universities in United States. OSU is also recognized as a space- grant, sun-grant, and sea-grant institution, making the university one of only two United States institutions to get all four designations, as well as the only public university to do so.

OSU offers undergraduate, graduate as well as doctoral degrees in over 250 academic degree programs. OSU's programs in ecology, forestry, microbiology, biochemistry, zoology, oceanography, nuclear engineering, public health, food science, and pharmacy are recognized nationally as top tier programs.

According to the U.S. News & World Report 2011 edition, it ranked OSU the 139th in the nation, and the 69th in Top Public University. The university also ranked among the top 70 in the nation and the top 150 universities in the world by Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Campus information

The 400-acre (160 ha) main campus is located in Corvallis, in the Willamette Valley, and its branch campus, OSU-Cascades, is located in Bend, which is only 2.5 hours east of Corvallis. The Valley Library is open 24 hours on weekdays, providing Mac or PC computers. The Dixon Recreation Center offers a climbing wall, multipurpose rooms, cardio and weight rooms, racquetball and squash courts, indoor track, sand volleyball courts, hot tub, pool, dive well, as well as the outdoor recreation center. The campus also provides on-campus housing for the students, features high-speed Internet throughout the residence halls.

OSU is ideally situated in Corvallis, the tenth largest city in the state. It is only a few hours driving distance from the
campus to the outdoor recreation opportunities. Oregon's largest city and cultural center, Portland, is only 85 miles north of the campus. San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Seattle are some of the big cities near Corvallis. The university also operates a free shuttle throughout campus.
