About California Maritime Academy
California Maritime Academy is a four-year, coeducational, public academy located in Vallejo, California. It was established in 1929. Previously known as California Nautical School, the institution officially changed its name to California Maritime Academy in 1939. Starting in 1940, graduates could receive a Bachelor of Science degree in addition to their Third Mate or Third Assistant Engineer license. This year marked the academy’s transformation from a trade school to a higher learning institution. It currently has 886 undergraduate students. California Maritime Academy was the first maritime academy to allow women into a licensed maritime program; the first women were admitted in 1973. California Maritime Academy competes in NCAA Division II athletics, and the school mascot is the Keelhauler.
