Entry Requirements
The MA Garden Design is a studio-based design course taught through core seminars and lectures in landscape and garden theory, landscape ecology, history and advanced design studio. These modules are accompanied by study in professional practice, construction and technology and design, conservation and restoration of historic gardens. The MA Garden Design engages in learning and teaching by organising the professional programme through lectures, seminars, studio and site visits. The course promotes thinking in a theory to practice framework of garden design, in terms of place and identity, physical and phenomenal relationships and social and ecological systems.
English language requirements
If you do not have English as a first language, you will normally be required to demonstrate an IELTS overall score (or equivalent) of:
- 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in all elements for a Further Education course
- 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in all elements for a Foundation degree, Higher Certificate or Higher Diploma
- 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all elements for a degree
- 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all elements for a postgraduate degree
If you have lower scores, you may be accepted onto a Pre-sessional English Language course, which can lead to entry to the appropriate programme of study.

- Advanced Design Studio (Urban Territory Project – Contextual to Garden Design)
- Research Methods in Landscape Architecture and Garden Design

Semester two
- Theory and History of Landscape and Garden Design
- Designing within a Historic Context
- Advanced Design Studio II (15 or 30 credit version)
- Option: e.g. Restoration and Management of Historic Gardens, Professional Practice,
