Entry Requirements

  • GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C or above, or Grade 4 under newly reformed GCSE grading, in English Language, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
  • A-level subjects: Grade C or above in Mathematics. Points from General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-Levels.
  • Specific subjects: Maths requirement can also be met by the Cambridge Pre-U Mathematics at Merit 3.
  • EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: To include Merit in one of the following units: Further Maths for Technicians; Further Maths for Construction and the Built Environment.

  • Access: Achievement of the HE Diploma; to include 15 Level 3 credits at Merit in Mathematics (before you apply, ask us which Maths units you need to do). Please list the units that you are taking in your application.
  • Baccalaureate IB: To include a minimum grade of 5 in higher level Mathematics.

Year 0 (Foundation Year)

  • Engineering Experimentation
  • Foundation Group Project
  • Foundation Mechanics
  • Foundation Maths, Algebra and Calculus
  • Introduction to Mechatronics

You will study the Foundation Year alongside students from our other Engineering and Maths courses, and so you may be able to transfer to a course in one of these areas at the end of the Foundation Year.

The normal expectation is that you must pass all Year 0 modules before progressing to Year 1.

Year 1

  • Mathematics and Engineering Principles
  • Surveying, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Drawing and Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
  • Environmental Engineering Field Study
  • Engineering and Environmental Materials
  • Engineering Hydrology
  • Civil Engineering Technology and Design

Year 2

  • Structural Design and Soil Mechanics
  • Project Management, Health and Safety Risk Management
  • Application of Mathematics for Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Hydraulics and Engineering Applications

Plus one of the following optional modules:

  • Understanding Coastal Dynamics
  • Engineering Geology
  • Traffic Engineering Design

Final Year

  • Final Year Project
  • Structural Analysis and Geotechnics
  • Design Project
  • Advanced Structural Modelling
