About Camberwell College of Arts

Camberwell offers courses in Art, Design and Conservation. With around 1,600 Foundation, Undergraduate and Postgraduate students it's one of London's smaller art colleges.

Our unique studio culture offers students the freedom and support to explore their individual creativity using facilities that embrace both traditional craftsmanship and digital technology.

Our courses help students develop their own ideas through:

Halls of Residence

  • Bernard Myers House: A hall with a great sense of community, conveniently close to Camberwell College of Arts.
  • Brooke Hall: A 20 minute walk from Camberwell College of Arts and a short bus ride to London College of Communication and Chelsea College of Arts.
  • Camberwell Campus: The freshly refurbished Georgian town houses of Camberwell Campus provides a historical setting in a convenient location.
  • Cordwainers Court: Located in Hackney, east London. One minute from the London College of Fashion Mare Street campus and also close to the Golden Lane site.
  • The Costume Store: The Costume Store opened in September 2012, on the site that once housed the BBC’s costume collection in west London.
  • Don Gratton House: Just a few minutes walk from the eclectic Brick Lane and the vibrant community of Whitechapel.
  • Furzedown Student Village: Set across three buildings in the residential area of Tooting. featuring beautiful interior design and an on-site gym.
  • Glassyard Building: A brand new development, located in the vibrant area of Stockwell, perfect for students looking for an independent living experience.
  • Highline Building: Highline Building is a brand new development for 2015 and is a short walk from London's Southbank.

  • Will Wyatt Court: Situated in the vibrant and trendy area of Old Street, Will Wyatt Court provides easy access to Central London.

Campus

Camberwell College of Arts has a range of professional workshops and facilities.

The workshops and facilities are supervised by experienced technicians, who are all skilled art and design practitioners.

Students are also able to borrow a range of equipment from our central loan store.

3D Workshops

Camberwell's 3D workshops allow all students to make work in wood, metal and plastic.

The 3D workshops are equipped with: 

  • Wood tools - ban saws, table saw, panel saw, router, belt sander
  • Metal tools - spot welding, MIG welding, TIG welding, metal guillotine, sand blaster, forge, enamelling kiln, grinding, metal saw, plasma cutter
  • Plastic tools - laser cutter, vacuum former, milling drill, hot wire, 3D printer

Our ceramic workshop consists of a working area, plaster room, glazing laboratory, spray booth and indoor kilns.

The college also has a foundry for metal casting.

Printmaking

Camberwell's printmaking centre gives students access to both traditional and digital printmaking facilities.

Specialist technicians support students in making work using the following techniques:

  • aquatint
  • digital
  • etching
  • letterpress
  • plate and stone lithography
  • mono printing
  • relief printing
  • screen printing

Photography

Camberwell's photography centre has a range of darkrooms and specialist equipment.

The photography centre is equipped with: 

  • Digital Darkroom - used to teach photographic digital workflows, principally with Adobe Lightroom (only available to BA Photography students)
  • Photographic Studio - this studio is for learning photographic studio techniques and the production of work in both stills and video formats, and has flash and constant lighting available
  • 35mm Black and White Resin Darkroom - a dedicated 35mm black and white darkroom, with nine enlargers and an Ilford resin coated paper processor
  • Multi Format Fibre Darkroom - this black and white darkroom is designed for tray processing, with ten enlargers configured for a variety of formats, and is reserved for fibre based printing only
  • Specialist Print Darkroom - this area is equipped with horizontal and vertical enlargers, as well as space for toning and alternative processes including cyanotype, salt printing, albumen printing and liquid emulsion
  • Black and White Film Processing Room - this space has daylight tanks or trays for large format
  • RA4 Colour Print Darkroom - the colour darkroom contains five enlargers and an RA4 processor for colour negative printing

Digital Media

Camberwell's digital media centre provides students with access to equipment and training.

The digital media centre includes an open access media suite, featuring a large number of Macs where students can use programmes such as In Design, Illustrator, After Effects and Final Cut Pro. 

Video and sound editing, stop frame animation, image manipulation and digital print facilities are also available.

We offer training in digital media software via both structured workshops and optional one-on-one sessions with our technicians.

There are also further Mac and PC computers available to students in the library.

Camberwell's south east London location is also home to a thriving art scene that hosts a variety of galleries, project spaces and studios that our students, staff and graduates work and exhibit in.
