SINGAPORE – In yet more exciting news and international recognition for Raffles Singapore, Raffles Fashion Designer Juliana NG has emerged among the top 30 semi-finalists for the competitive EcoChic Design Award, the first international sustainable fashion design competition bringing together both Asian and European fashion designers.
Organised by Hong Kong-based fashion non-governmental organisation Redress, and sponsored by Hong Kong governmental agency Create Hong Kong, budding fashion designers from across the globe had put their talents to the test for the sustainable fashion design competition – which challenges designers to create mainstream clothing with as minimal textile waste as possible.
From recycled and iron-burnt fabrics, to even the likes of kitchen foil, plastic straws and even metal strips, participants put a whole new spin on creativity, and gave a brand new life to what’s traditionally deemed as ‘waste’!
As part of Raffles Fashion Design’s module on sustainability, all students were given the opportunity to submit creations for the prestigious competition – with Juliana’s design making it through a rigorous selection process into the top 30 (15 from each region), where a professional international judging panel reviewed works based off their creativity, originality, marketability and of course, sustainability.
“It’s thrilling to have made it through as a semi-finalist for the Asian Region. Being a semi-finalist has already given me stellar exposure to the field of quality sustainable fashion design, and a taste of the levels required internationally,” she shared.
“I’m grateful for the immense guidance and direction I’ve received at Raffles, which has allowed me to view the fashion world from very different perspectives, and provided me with a great stepping stone towards working in the fashion industry.”
