About this course

Designed for experienced teachers, the University of Auckland's internationally recognised MTESOL enables students to further develop their knowledge and skills for employment as language teachers, or for more senior roles. Some of the courses may also be completed online.

University of Auckland

Completed one of the following with a GPA of 3.5:

  • A bachelors degree in any subject (Taught 120 points) and at least two years of teaching experience
  • A Bachelor of Arts (Honours), or a one-year postgraduate qualification following an undergraduate degree, in a subject related to language teaching, business English or language studies (Taught 120 points), and at least one year of teaching experience

Another tertiary institution

Completed one of the following with a GPE of 3.5 from a recognised university (or similar institution):

  • An undergraduate degree in any subject (Taught 120 points) and at least two years of teaching experience
  • A one-year postgraduate qualification following an undergraduate degree, or an equivalent four-year undergraduate degree, in a subject related to language teaching, business English or language studies (Taught 120 points), and at least one year of teaching experience

Curriculum

There are two different ways that you can structure your MTESOL:

Taught courses only

  • Three elective courses in conducting research in applied language studies, curriculum design, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition or creativity in language teaching (45 points)
  • Five more elective courses from our wide range of language teaching courses (75 points)

Taught courses and a dissertation

  • One core course in conducting research in applied language studies (15 points)
  • Five elective courses from our wide range of language teaching courses (75 points)
  • A dissertation (30 points)
