About Eastern Institute of Technology

Founded in 1975, the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) is one of New Zealand's top-rated polytechnics. Located in the North-Island, EIT is a major provider of higher education on the east coast, offering more than 130 qualifications from certificate and diploma to degree and postgraduate level. These programmes cover a wide variety of subject areas, including business, computing, health science, wine science and viticulture.

At EIT, students can benefit from public service opportunities to gain practical experience as well as from the significantly lower student-lecturer ratio, which will encourage higher student involvement in class. EIT's academic programmes are also underpinned by the research activities of lecturers who are respected academics and industry professionals, giving students direct exposure to their relevant industries. Such exposure will help students develop relevant work skills and get useful industry contacts to prepare them for the workforce - even as they are studying.

Campus information

EIT programmes are offered across three campuses and five Regional Learning Centres around New Zealand:

  • Tairāwhiti Campus (Gisborne)
  • Auckland Campus
  • Hawke’s Bay Campus
  • Central Hawke's Bay Learning Centre
  • Hastings Learning Centre
  • Maraenui Learning Centre
  • Ruatoria Learning Centre
  • Wairoa Learning Centre

EIT's campuses come equipped with top quality facilities, such as high-tech trades workshops, professional-standard training kitchens and a fully-equipped wine science and viticulture laboratory. These facilities are purpose-built for EIT programmes to enhance teaching and learning. On top of that, there are many student services available to cater to the various other needs of all campus community members, including:

  • Academic Learning Services
  • Accommodation
  • Chaplaincy
  • Career Development
  • Bookshop
  • Childcare
  • Pouwhirinaki – Māori & Pasifika Student Support
  • Disability Services
  • EIT Students' Association

Accommodation

EIT Student Village

The Student Village consists of twelve villas, each housing six students in their own furnished bedroom priced at NZ$180 per week plus NZ$200 deposit. The villas come complete with shared cooking, bathroom and lounge facilities, and are supervised by Student Village Managers residing on site. The Student Village is located opposite the Hawke’s Bay campus, next door to the Pettigrew Green Arena and a 10-minute walk from the Taradale shops, making it a comfortable and convenient option for EIT students.

Homestay

As an alternative, students can choose to apply for homestay accommodation (recommended for English language student). With a cost of NZ$220 per week, homestay provides a warm family environment and includes:

  • Furnished bedroom with study area
  • Clean bed linens and towels
  • Three meals per day (students may be expected to prepare their own breakfast and lunch)
  • Internet connection
  • Pickup from Napier airport

Homestay families are located in the Taradale or Greenmeadows area, which is in close proximity to EIT. This allows students to easily travel back and forth between their accommodation and campus either by walking, cycling, or taking the bus.

Flatting

For students with partners or seek independence and flexibility, flatting is another option to be considered. The Flats on York are a self-catering accommodation consisting of 5 units with 2-3 bedrooms, and are within the distance of a 35-minute walk to campus, 10-minute bike ride, or 5-minute drive/bus ride. The Flats on Gloucester, on the other hand, are a self-catering complex of 6 units with 2 bedrooms in each flat, located right across campus (approximately a 2-minute walk).

The flats both offer furnished rooms with shared kitchen, bathroom, lounge and living area. Cost is NZ$210-$220 per week (inclusive of internet and electricity), plus an accommodation bond. Bedding, linen and kitchen facilities are provided - along with free airport pickup.

Private Accommodation

Private accommodation arrangements are also possible. Rent ranges from NZ$100-$200 per week depending on location and utilities included. Where utilities are not included in the rent, students can expect to pay per week:

  • Internet - NZ$10
  • Electricity - NZ$20-$30

As for airport pickup, students can acquire information on transport options from the International Centre.
