20 year old Tan Jun Syern and 4 of his teammates made the 5 minute film titled “POSTMAN” where a boy named Kumar, whose affection for his deceased mother drove him to slay his own father, an alcoholic who killed her when he was just 10 years old.
In the story, Postman, lead character’s gift to his mother for Mother’s Day. The creativity and surprise won Tan and his team the judges’ recognition and they walked away with RM 6,000. “We sat down and brainstormed, and the idea just sort of came to us,” said Tan, adding that the ending was a twist that no one had expected.
Tan said the team would use the prize money to make another short film. “This time we would be able to make a film with a bigger budget,” he said, adding that the submission for the competition was made on roughly RM20.
This competition was organized by The Mines in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation, the inaugural competition was initiated to drive more interest in the field of film-making among youths while encouraging creative thinking. It ran for two months, from April 1 to May 30, for those aged between 18 and 25. The competition received 147 entries and 20 were shortlisted for online voting, which accounted for 30% of the score, 40% for originality and 30% for technicality.
