Penang Medical College (PMC) Conferring Ceremony 2015

Penang Medical College (PMC) graduate doctors at the 2015 conferring ceremony may apply for internship in Ireland. PMC is the only medical school outside the EU whose graduates have this privilege. This internship is recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and the Medical Councils of many other countries.

Penang Medical College is wholly owned by the world-renowned Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and University College Dublin (UCD) and all 97 graduates were conferred with the highly sought medical degrees MB BCh BAO (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Obstetrics) from The National University of Ireland (NUI) and RCSI or UCD, officially becoming doctors with globally recognised qualifications. Malaysian graduates are also guaranteed housemanships in Malaysia and this is recognised by the Irish Medical Council (IMC).

“Over the years, PMC has been contributing to healthcare worldwide and in Malaysia in particular through their doctors who have graduated from its campus in Penang as well as RCSI or UCD campuses in Dublin. As PMC moves forward to position itself to play a bigger role as a leading medical degrees education provider in the region and beyond, PMC graduates are the future doctors of the world with an international network of healthcare professionals as a resource” said President, CEO and Dean of PMC, Professor Amir Khir.

Irish Network of Hospitals

The graduate doctors also receive Licentiates from the RCSI and Royal College Physicians in Ireland (RCPI). With NUI medical degrees, hospitals in Ireland and worldwide are keen to recruit PMC graduates who are recognised by IMC for a variety of specialities and grades. The RCSI network of hospitals in Ireland, Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar and other hospitals in Dublin, Offaly, and Louth are the recent examples of interest in IMC recognised doctors.

PMC Families – Testament to Quality & Recognition

Graduating today is Lim Sheri, the third PMC graduate among her siblings. Her sisters Sophie Lim (Class of 2012) and Sylvia Lim (Class of 2006) graduated from PMC before her, and they are not the only siblings to have done so. Deciding on a medical school is crucial to the future of a medical graduate, parents, siblings and relatives prefer established medical institutions with a history of excellence and recognition.

Shanaz Md Sharom enrolled at PMC after her sister, Nazreen Shahrom (Class of 2007). Safwath Mohamed Nizar from Sri Lanka is the second PMC graduate in his family, his cousin (Class of 2007) now works in Singapore. Other 2015 graduates who followed their siblings are Simon Yong (brother David Yong, Class of 2007) Yap Kaysen (sister Yap Hui Jean, Class of 2012). Scholarship recipient Ng Chin Vent, is sister of Ng Chin Ang, 3rd year PMC student.

Since its inception in 1996, PMC has grown from strength to strength to become a leading medical college in Malaysia having produced 1,300 doctors.

PMC graduates are known to bring skills admired among the medical fraternity. Students of PMC spend their first two and a half years in RCSI and UCD, where they undergo intensive pre-clinical training. In these locations PMC students have access to the best-equipped laboratories and libraries in Europe and they are also taught by experienced scientists and leading medical doctors in their respective fields.

PMC students then return to Penang for clinical training for 2½ years at PMC.

RCSI and UCD have over 230 years and 140 years of medical education history respectively and offer stimulating, diverse and vibrant experiences. The fact that PMC is their first joint venture outside Ireland is a powerful statement of the cultural collaboration between two nations which are half a world apart. The expertise and latest state-of-the-art medical technologies help nurture PMC students to become internationally recognised doctors in the medical fraternity worldwide.
