About Institute for Advanced Studies - Universiti Malaya

University of Malaya (UM) was established on 8 October 1949 because of the unification of King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College. UM is the oldest university and one of the most well-known university in Malaysia. The Institute of Graduate Studies or better known as IGS is the postgraduate centre for UM.

IGS was established in 1979 as they want to encourage various disciplines of research and graduates training to meet the demands of quality in the industry. Over the years, the number of students in IGS had grown steadily. There are about 11,000 students in IGS with about 3,500 international students from more than 80 countries.

There are various sections in IGS that supervise the academic progress, finance and welfare. There are Admissions Section, Examination Section, Finance & Scholarship Sections, Thesis Unit and Student Development & Writing Unit.

The Faculty of Business and Accountancy, University of Malaya is the only Malaysian Higher Education Institution that has received accreditation from The Association of MBAs, a global standard for all MBA, DBA and MBM programmes. The Faculty of Business & Accountancy also has received the 4 Palmes - Top Business School Rating from Eduniversal Ranking 2013 which makes UM as the only institution in Malaysia to attain the rating.

Accommodation

There are 12 residential colleges in UM Kuala Lumpur. There is also an International House in Section 17, Petaling Jaya that provides housing for UM students. These residential colleges can accommodate nearly 12,000 students. Some residential colleges provide food and accommodation for students at RM15 to RM20 per student per day. The rest offer accommodation at RM150 to RM360 for each student per month.

Some of the facilities that students can enjoy in their on campus residence are recreation rooms, food stalls, TV rooms, gymnasiums, basketball courts, badminton courts, study halls, and cafeterias.

Campus

University of Malaya is situated in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. The university is supported by the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), the largest research hospital in Malaysia. There are also 2 academies, 12 faculties and 3 academic centres inside University Malaya. 

There are various facilities in UM such the library, computer facilities, WiFi, laboratories, UM shuttle bus service, sports & recreational facilities that is well cared for, student clinic, post office, book shop, bank, ATM and more.

UM campus can be reach by public transport or taxi. There are various options of transportation for students to choose from that best suit their needs. As UM is located in Kuala Lumpur, you can reach UM from various different part of the country. The nearest station to UM is Universiti LRT Station, there are RapidKL buses that will be available from the station to UM campus.
