About University of Saint Joseph

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) represents Catholic education at its highest, university level. Our university inherits the longstanding tradition of Catholic humanistic education in Macao, which extended beyond the confines of China to all East and South-East Asia, and the islands of Oceania.

Using English as a medium and teaching Chinese and Portuguese as languages to be known by all, USJ sets the stage for its international staff and multinational student-body. In our academy, East and West carry on the centuries-old dialogue through which Macao acquired its unique identity.

Close links to the Catholic University of Portugal and to Catholic universities in Angola, Brazil and Mozambique, set us in the privileged position of being able to contribute to Macao’s present calling as a bridge between Portuguese-speaking countries.

Our study programmes provide students with the essentials of their major field of knowledge, but include modules to broaden their outlook on the world and stimulate creative thinking. We care for the competence of our graduates in their future professions, but our privilege and mission is to introduce them to a university environment where they learn to analyse, question, evaluate and decide in the context of consciously assimilated values and culture.

We are committed to improving the quality of our academic life in the light of suggestions from staff, students and society, to better serve higher education in Asia and Macao.

Campus information

Besides the academic facilities, the current facilities allow also for ample working and social space for our students, including a garden, sports facilities (at the Seminary), reading spaces, laboratories for languages and science, IT rooms, two libraries, a speaker’s hall and several other classrooms and support facilities.

The construction of the new campus is close to completion and we expect it to be completed during the 2016/2017 academic year. Built on 1.5 ha of land, the campus will offer 36,000 square meters of constructed area that includes classrooms, labs, theatre, music rooms, auditorium, sports areas and residential and recreational facilities for faculty and students.

The theme of this campus is environmental-protection, and it includes state-of-the-art technology and design to minimise the use of energy, materials and water, which has earned it the nickname “Green Campus”.

The current USJ campus is fully equipped in one of the most prestigious business and commercial centres of Macau, the NAPE.  In 2015/2016, the university are operating in two locations in NAPE, and at an important historical building in the centre of town, the Saint Joseph Seminary.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) known for its international pool of students, and it offers a limited number of residences to accommodate students especially those coming from overseas – which are International and/or Exchange students. Students at USJ can apply for accommodation in the USJ Student Residences managed by the Office for Student Affairs.
