One of the main advantages of choosing Carlow over Ireland’s bigger cities of Dublin, Cork or Galway is the low cost of living. There are a variety of accommodation options in Carlow and all at very affordable prices. The estimated cost of living in Carlow is RM2000-RM2500 per month. Wherever you choose to live, it is likely to be within walking distance of the college itself and so you will not need to save any money for transport costs.
There are houses to rent in Carlow and you can check out what’s available and how much they cost. A three bed house costs between RM3700 and RM4600 per month, this price excludes bills for essential utilities such as electricity, heating, water etc. On the daft website you will also find rooms to rent in shared houses.
Many families in Carlow open their homes to students from at home and abroad. Local students call this type of accommodation ‘digs’ and often the family provide both breakfast and dinner which is included in the price. Utilities costs are also included in the price of your ‘digs’, which usually costs between RM450 and RM 550 per week. You make the payment directly to your host family. The advantage of this type of accommodation for international students is the opportunity to get to know Irish culture and experience Irish hospitality at its best.
Institute of Technology Carlow have two specialised student residences that we offer through our accommodation partners. If you choose this type of accommodation you will be surrounded by your fellow students both local and international. The Hatch Apartments are in a central location, right by the riverside and with beautiful views of Carlow town, perfect for those of you who want to be close to the action and nightlife.
The Cois Abhainn Residences are right beside the college so couldn’t be more convenient for those of you who like to be close to the library and campus life even when lectures are over. Each apartment in Cois Abhainn includes two single rooms with access to a shared bathroom and one twin room with a bathroom for you and your roommate.
At both student residences a security deposit is paid when you move in and provided that no damage is done to the room during your stay the deposit will be returned to you when you leave. This type of deposit is known as a refundable deposit and may also be required if you chose to rent or to share a house.
