About this course

This program provides an insight into the cultural development of man from the earliest times to the early modern period - with the exception of the cultures of the Ancient Near East and Ancient Cultures of the Mediterranean, which are covered in other courses. The primary source serves as basis to the scientific disciplines involved while the material remains of the respective periods (construction and archaeological monuments, archaeological finds, pictorial evidence).

For the early history and the Middle Ages there is the possibility and necessity of a synthesis with the written tradition. A special training focuses on imparting basic knowledge of the cultural history of the European area in pre-modern times (pre-and early history and the Middle Ages). This includes knowledge of important monuments and archaeological finds. In addition to the students basic knowledge in the field of archaeological methodology and theory will be taught. This includes the acquisition of basic skills in the field of archeology, the archaeological data collection and analysis as well as in the public agency with an archaeological expertise.
