Malaysia offers unique and attractive education choices to local and international students and is set to be a higher education and academic hub in Asia. It has attracted a number of world-class universities to establish their branches in Malaysia. This article lists the UK, Australian, and other universities in Malaysia that are already open for admission or in the process of opening. They offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that are identical to that of their main campus overseas.
The first foreign branch campus that was set up in Malaysia was by Monash University, Australia which was established in 1998. Monash Malaysia has been given the rating of 'excellent' by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education, which entitles it to government sponsorship of its students, government research grants and greater flexibility in setting staff salaries. The Malaysian campus is currently home to approximately 4,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. It has research strengths in biotechnology, medicine & health, economic & business modelling, Islamic banking, electronic test technology and agri-business.
Curtin University's operations in Sarawak commenced in February 1999. In 2002, the new campus was built. Curtin Sarawak offers identical degrees to those at the Curtin University main campus in Western Australia. Examinations for the degree programmes are set and moderated at Curtin's main campus in Perth to ensure that they meet and fulfill the academic standards. Academics from Perth visit the Curtin Sarawak campus on a regular basis for quality audit and for consultations on various issues ranging from assignments, projects, tasks and other assessments.
The University was recently ranked as "excellent" (or tier 5 in a scale of tier 1 - 6) and is classified as a private institution, by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education. The degrees that are awarded are accredited by international professional bodies such as the Association of MBA's and the UK Engineering Council.
Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus is the foreign branch campus of Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Australia) located in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.
