About this course

This course is designed to qualify students for careers in a wide range of industries, government and commercial organizations. These typically embrace electrical energy production, electrical equipment design and manufacture, electrical drives and power electronics, information technology, electronic hardware and software, automation, robotics and control, communications, radio and television, computer engineering, solid-state devices, microelectronics and VLSI (Very Large-Scale Integration).

Students are offered the chance to study a broad range of topics with specialization in the later years of the course. In the final year each student completes an individual project. With the broad range of skills students will acquire in taking this degree, the future career prospects are excellent. Students may find employment in areas as diverse as software development, fibre optic and mobile communications, aerospace technology, automotive systems or renewable energy technologies.

Entry Requirements

Preliminary year (year one of four) entry

  • Applicants must be at least 17 years of age at the start of the course.
  • Students from 12-year education systems are normally required to have graduated from High School. Applicants for all degree programmes should have achieved at least four grades B's at GCSE, or an equivalent level qualification.
  • Minimum English language requirement
    • IELTS 5.5 with the writing band no less than 5.0
    • TOEFL (IBT) 71 (minimum 17 in any element)
    • PTE Academic 55 (minimum 51)

Qualifying year (year two of four) entry

  • Students from twelve or thirteen year education systems, or who have studied a recognised foundation course, are not usually required to complete a preliminary year. Instead they may study a three year degree. Year two entry applicants should have achieved a minimum of:
    • GCE A Level: BBB-AAB
    • IB Diploma: 30-34 points
    • HKDSE 544
    • Indian Standard XII 75-85%
    • A recognised foundation programme
    • 1-2 years of study at a recognised institution
    • An international equivalent
  • Minimum English language requirement
    • IELTS 6.5 with the writing band no less than 6.0
    • TOEFL (IBT) 87 (minimum 20 in Speaking and 19 in all other elements)
    • PTE Academic 62 (minimum 55)
